Credit crunch forces London's Olympic bosses to recalculate
London's Olympic chiefs are having to rework their budgets as the global credit crunch squeezes private funding for the 2012 Games -- although Team GB's success in Beijing has helped boost the coffers.
The British government expects about seven billion pounds (12.4 billion dollars, 8.9 billion euros) of private sector money to go into the Olympics and the regeneration of the area around Stratford, east of the British capital.
But fears are growing that, as banks worldwide stop lending, developers are struggling to come up with the cash, and taxpayers will have to step in.
The one-billion-pound Olympic Village, which will provide accommodation for 17,000 athletes, is proving the biggest headache as Australia's Lend Lease, the preferred developer for the project, reportedly struggles to find the money.
A government study published in July warned the deal with Lend Lease -- which had hoped to recoup some of its investment by selling on some of the accommodation after the Games -- was "significantly affected by the downturn in the financial and property markets since the turn of the year".
"Fundamentally, we originally expected to have quite big sums of private sector funding for the Olympic Village and for the media centre," said John Armitt, chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA).
"The consequence of what is happening in the markets means that the availability of funding is more difficult -- that is not to say that it is not available but, if it is available, it is available on harsh terms."
The ODA, which is responsible for the infrastructure of the London 2012 Games, planned to put in 500 million pounds for the Olympic Village and media centre, with the private sector picking up the rest.
But this balance will likely change, with extra public funds provided from a two-billion-pound contingency fund.
Discussions were "going on with banks", Lend Lease and the preferred developers for the media centre, Armitt said, adding that the solution was likely to see "an element of contingency funding required".
But he stressed that the total 9.3-billion-pound budget for the Games -- the majority of it being paid for by taxpayers -- will not increase.
Work has already started on the Olympic Village, and the government insists that any budgetary reorganisation will not affect the scheduled construction.
Meanwhile LOCOG, the committee responsible for actually putting on the Games, is confident of sticking to its two-billion-pound budget, noting Britain's haul of 47 medals including 19 golds in Beijing has helped.
"In terms of staging the Games, at the moment there's been no impact (from the credit crunch)," a spokesman told AFP. About half of the money expected to get through sponsorship -- a third of LOCOG's total budget -- has been secured.
"We all recognise the economic environment is difficult but so far, following the success of Team GB and the Paralympic Team GB, we have had quite a lot of interest since Beijing for joining the commercial programme," he said.
Other projects also appear on course. Westfield, the developers building the 1.45-billion-pound retail complex at Stratford that is due to act as the "gateway" to the Games, said it was "completely confident" of its funding.
The head of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, is also optimistic, telling reporters last month: "The (London) Olympic construction authority is looking for more funding but the latest report we had is that they would manage in finding the proper funding."

ASEAN ministers 'confident' region will weather credit crisis
Southeast Asian finance ministers are confident regional banks and the financial system will be able to weather the global credit crunch, a joint statement said Wednesday.
Regional economic fundamentals "remain sound" in spite of the liquidity crisis, the ministers from the 10-country Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) said in a statement released after a meeting in Dubai.
While regional economic growth will likely drop from the average 6.7 percent achieved last year, there is little chance of a repeat of the 1997 financial crisis that crippled Southeast Asian economies, it said.
"We expressed full confidence in ASEAN member states' economic and financial resilience and their ability to weather the current difficulties in global financial markets.
"ASEAN today is lean and fit, in part reflective of the significant reforms undertaken over the decade since the 1997 financial crisis.
"ASEAN member states have strengthened fiscal sustainability, deepened capital markets, enhanced financial regulation and supervisory frameworks, reduced debt exposure and improved their reserve positions."
Regional economies have also had relatively little direct exposure to the credit crisis in the United States and governments have moved effectively to contain any economic flow-on effects, the statement said.
ASEAN ministers had agreed to establish a new macroeconomic and finance surveillance office at the bloc's Jakarta secretariat to monitor stability in the region and help direct emergency liquidity funds.
Stocks across Asia slid dramatically Wednesday on fears of spreading market contagion following the collapse of US investment bank Lehman Brothers and the government bailout of insurer AIG.
Asian leaders have moved to reassure their jittery electorates across the region, where many remember vividly the misery of the crisis a decade ago.
South Korean president Lee Myung-bak earlier this week told a cabinet meeting that the current situation "is wholly different from the foreign exchange crisis of 1997".
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said he was "completely certain" there would be no repeat of the crisis.

Central banks unleash rate cuts in new day of turmoil
Leading central banks unleashed coordinated interest rate cuts on Wednesday in a bid to counter the global financial crisis amid dire warnings about the economic pain ahead.
US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said that more financial firms were expected to go bankrupt in the United States and the International Monetary Fund warned of a "major downturn" for the global economy.
On stock markets, panic-selling continued, with the Tokyo stock market suffering its worst day since the 1987 stock market crash and European markets losing another 5.0-6.0 percent.
On Wall Street, the Dow dropped 2.01 percent, the sixth successive day of falls after a highly volatile session.
The US Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank , Bank of England and central banks in Sweden and Switzerland all cut their rates by half a percentage point. China joined in, cutting 27 basis points off its key rate.
The central banks highlighted in a joint statement that they had cooperated in "unprecedented joint actions such as the provision of liquidity to reduce strains in financial markets" during the crisis.
"It was a very good way to underline the concerns and the shared concerns. In that way, it helps," analyst Peter Kretzmer from Bank of America in New York told AFP.
The rate cuts and a separate move by Britain to pump 87 billion dollars into its stricken banks were designed to underpin shaky confidence in the financial system after a wave of bankruptcies.
US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson warned that more financial firms should be expected to go under in the United States despite a massive 700-billion-dollar rescue package approved last week.
"One thing we must recognize -- even with the new Treasury authorities, some financial institutions will fail," Paulson said, adding that the financial chaos had "seriously impacted" the economy.
Political leaders welcomed the interest rate cuts. "It is important and helpful that central banks are working in a coordinated way to deal with stress in the financial system," White House spokesman Tony Fratto said.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said it would "help build confidence" in the global economy and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, current EU president, called it a "very important decision."
Neither the rate cut nor Britain's costly initiative to bolster the banking system could halt another stock market freefall across the world.
Panic selling hit Asian stock exchanges. Tokyo dropped 9.38 percent, Hong Kong fell 8.2 percent and Sydney 5.0 percent.
While the initial impact of the central banks' move was to breathe some life back into the main European markets, the relief was only temporary.
The London stock market plunged 5.38 percent, with dealers saying investors were unconvinced that the rate cuts would stop the rot.
On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 2.01 percent to close at 9,257.15. The blue-chip index has shed 14.7 percent, or more than 1,600 points, in the past six sessions.
Some analysts felt that central banks should further cut rates. The Fed, with its main rate at 1.5 percent, has little room for maneuver however.
"The central banks have to cut their rates further ... we have lost too much time," Robert Halver, a strategist at Baader Bank in Frankfurt told AFP.
Unveiling a package which will see Britain's eight main banks partly nationalized, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said "the global financial market has ceased to function" and needed "bold and far-reaching solutions."
The government said it would use 50 billion pounds (64 billion euros, 87 billion dollars) to buy stakes in HSBC, Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays, HBOS, Lloyds TSB, Standard Chartered, Abbey and Nationwide Building Society.
It would also make available 200 billion pounds in short-term loans and issue 250 billion pounds to guarantee loans between banks.
In other moves, the Federal Reserve announced that it had authorized a new 37.8-billion-dollar cash infusion into troubled insurance giant AIG, which was nationalized last month to save it from bankruptcy.
The Fed said that an 85-billion-dollar loan facility made available to AIG last month had been drawn down.
In Iceland, the northern island nation worst hit by the financial crisis, the central bank said it was abandoning efforts to shore up the national currency, which has collapsed in value.
The government has since Tuesday nationalized two of the country's three biggest banks and Prime Minister Geir Haarde said the country's economic recovery would take years.

Medical searches on Web can trigger anxiety: study
Playing doctor on the Web often leads people to mistakenly believe that they are suffering from rare illnesses, according to a study by researchers at Microsoft.
"Web search engines have the potential to escalate medical concerns," or "cyberchondria," Ryen White and Eric Horvitz wrote in the study published by the Redmond, Washington-based software company on Monday.
They described cyberchondria as "unfounded increases in health anxiety based on the review of Web content."
White, an expert in text mining, Web search and navigation, and Horvitz, another Microsoft researcher who is president of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, noted that the Internet provides an "abundant source" of medical information.
"However, the Web has the potential to increase the anxieties of people who have little or no medical training, especially when Web search is employed as a diagnostic procedure," they said.
"Common, likely innocuous symptoms can escalate into the review of content on serious, rare conditions that are linked to the common symptoms," they said.
For example, Web surfers with a headache may determine they have a brain tumor or those with chest pain that they are suffering a heart attack.
"A brain tumor is a concerning possibility when a searcher experiences headache," the researchers said. "However, the probability of a brain tumor given a general complaint of headache is typically quite low."
"Such escalations from common symptoms to serious concerns may lead to unnecessary anxiety, investment of time, and expensive engagements with healthcare professionals," White and Horvitz said.
The researchers said the study was aimed at "improving the search and navigation experience for people turning to the Web to interpret common symptoms" and determining "the challenges that cyberchondria presents for search engine designers."
Microsoft's Live Search engine provided the Web search results for the study and MSN Health and Fitness (health.msn.com) provided medical search results.
The researchers also surveyed the health-related search experiences of 515 individuals.
According to other studies cited by the researchers, eight in 10 American adults have searched for healthcare information online.

India probes Pakistan links to Mumbai attacks
Indian police investigating who was behind the massive militant assault on Mumbai interrogated Sunday the only gunman who survived, as Pakistan insisted it was not involved.
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari urged India not to "over-react" after Indian and US officials suggested the militants, who killed nearly 200 people, could have been from the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba.
The group, which is fighting against Indian control of Kashmir, was behind the deadly 2001 assault on the Indian parliament that pushed New Delhi and Islamabad to the brink of war.
Indian media reported that the badly-injured gunman had identified all the attackers as Pakistan citizens and acknowledged that they were trained by Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Ajmal Amir Kamal, 21, who was caught on a CCTV camera wearing a T-shirt with the logo "Versace," was reportedly being interrogated in a safe-house in Mumbai.
US counter-terrorism officials told AFP some evidence was emerging that Lashkar-e-Taiba could have been behind the Mumbai attacks , while Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee named "elements in Pakistan" as responsible.
Lashkar-e-Taiba has denied any responsibility.
Intelligence chiefs scrambled to explain why they had failed to prevent at least a dozen militants� mounting the multiple attacks on the city on Wednesday evening.
Security forces only regained control of Mumbai 60 hours later when they succeeded in killing the last three militants holed up with hostages inside the famous Taj Mahal hotel .
The previous day, elite troops had stormed a Mumbai Jewish centre and killed two gunmen -- but also found eight dead Israeli hostages.
Another luxury hotel that was attacked, the Oberoi/Trident, was cleared of militants late Friday, with scores of trapped guests rescued and dozens of bodies found.
Officials said that 195 people had been killed and nearly 300 injured in the attacks, which began when the militants split into groups to strike multiple targets across the city, including the main railway station and a hospital.
About 30 foreigners were killed including nine Israelis, five Americans, two French, two Australians and two Canadians.
One militant group entered Mumbai by boat, while others had arrived a month ago to stockpile arms and explosives and infiltrate the targets before the attacks were launched.
Survivors have given terrifying accounts of the carnage. Phillippe Meyer, who had been on a business trip to Mumbai, said he was stuck in one of the hotels targeted by militants.
"We found ourselves shut away in our rooms for a very long time, about 40 hours. The information was very confusing," said Meyer, 53, as he returned to France.
Television footage of the inside of the Taj hotel showed half-eaten meals left on tables as diners fled for their lives.
The restaurant walls were pockmarked with bullet holes and the floor covered with a thick layer of glass.
"I cannot believe what I have seen in the last 36 hours. I have seen dead bodies, blood everywhere and only heard gunshots," said Muneer Al Mahaj, an Iraqi national, after he was rescued.
Witnesses said the attackers had specifically rounded up foreigners� with US and British passports.
The United States, Israel and Britain were among countries that offered expert assistance to help with the investigation.

Natalie Portman refused to play an emotionally conflicted nun in new movie 'Doubt' because she didn't 'understand celibacy'.
Director John Patrick Shanley - who also penned the play on which the film is based - has revealed Natalie was in the running for the part of Sister James, which was eventually taken by Amy Adams.
He said: 'We asked Natalie Portman, and Natalie was very interested but kept saying she had a problem. And we finally nailed down as to what the problem was. She basically said she didn't understand celibacy.'
'Doubt' - which also stars Meryl Streep as Sister Aloysius Beauvier - tells the story of a nun who confronts a priest after discovering he has been sexually abusing a black student.
Meryl has already been tipped for an Academy Award for her role.
However, Shanley downplayed the Oscar buzz surrounding the film, insisting: 'Our job is to do the very best we can and strive for excellence, to do it because it means something to us and that we think its worthy of communicating to other people.
'Awards are a wonderful thing but I think that's why I do it and that's why they do it.'

Thai airport protesters vow to 'fight to death'
Protesters occupying Bangkok's main airports vowed Friday to "fight to the death," as police said they would negotiate with the demonstrators before trying to evict them under emergency laws.
Embattled Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat had imposed a state of emergency around the airports on Thursday night but security forces feared a raid could spark a bloody confrontation with the anti-government activists.
Airlines began flying stranded air travellers out from a naval base Friday, but tens of thousands of passengers are believed to have missed flights after four days of unrest that have badly hit Thailand's tourist industry.
"We are not afraid. We will fight to the death, we will not surrender and we are ready," one of the main protest leaders, Somsak Kosaisuk, told a crowd of supporters at the domestic Don Mueang airport.
Anti-government activists braced for an assault overnight, extending razor wire cordons to about three kilometres (two miles) around the flagship Suvarnabhumi international airport and blocking access roads, witnesses said.
Police say around 4,000 protesters from the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) -- a movement backed by elements of the palace, the army and Thailand's Bangkok-based elite -- are occupying Suvarnabhumi for a fourth day.
Another 2,500 are at Don Mueang, where the cabinet's temporary offices have been located since protesters seized their headquarters at Government House in Bangkok in August, calling for the government to resign.
Somchai's attempts to assert his authority by declaring emergency rule and authorising action to clear the airports were apparently undermined by the police announcement of further talks with the protesters.
"We will use the gentle way first. The priority is to negotiate and not crack down immediately -- we are all Thais," regional deputy police commander Major General Piya Sorntrakoon told AFP.
The army has already said it is opposed to the use of force against the protesters , stoking tensions between the government and the military in a nation that has seen 18 coups since the end of absolute monarchy in 1932.
The PAD have vowed not to quit until Somchai resigns, alleging that their arch-foe, exiled former premier Thaksin Shinawatra -- who was ousted in a 2006 coup -- is the puppetmaster behind the government elected in December.
The military denied rumours on Thursday that it was planning to launch a a similar putsch, following reports that Somchai was about to sack the powerful army chief for calling for the dissolution of the government.
Yet in a further sign of the civilian-military rift, government spokesman Suparat Nakbunnam said Somchai would remain in Chiang Mai "indefinitely."
"As there are still uncertainties in the tensions between the government and army, for his safety the prime minister will stay in Chiang Mai," he said.
With the crisis affecting Thailand's ties with the rest of the world, the secretary general of Southeast Asian bloc ASEAN travelled to Thailand to assess whether a summit scheduled for December in Chiang Mai can proceed.
Airlines meanwhile struggled to get even a handful of passengers out of the U-Tapao naval base about 190 kilometres (118 miles) southeast of Bangkok -- a low-tech, one-runway airfield built by US forces during the Vietnam War.
"Around 40 flights are going to fly in and out of U-Tapao today (Friday)," said an official at the Department of Civil Aviation.
"Yesterday there were only half that number, around 20 flights, because most airlines did not know that U-Tapao has been opened."
The Ministry of Tourism called a crisis meeting Friday attended by airport officials and representatives from 50 airlines to try to map out a strategy for getting people in and out of the kingdom.

What a Frustrating Day! DATA ENTRY PORTAL!
I was wondering if Data Entry Jobs are really true, So I tried to sign up for Data Entry Portal. I paid $57 (almost 2800 php) and I get to access their portal thingy and I can check out all the things that was listed there that according to them is a legitimate date entry jobs. But, As I was scanning the things from their, it seems that I have to pay for another thing again! I got so frustrated that I emailed them that I want my money back. Because the things that are listed in their system are the same things that shows up when I look or search things with tags "DATA ENTRY JOBS" or "WORK AT HOME JOBS".
I am so sorry and is so sad that I have to be scammed. I was soooooooooooooooo stupid! I hope that they really realyl are going to give me my money back. It is so frustrating, I am so not happy, does anyone has the same experience with me? Please let me know what to do. :(

'Twilight' takes $70.6M bite out of box office!!!
LOS ANGELES - Audiences found the vampire romance "Twilight" infectious in its opening weekend, pushing the movie to a take of $70.6 million.
Catherine Hardwicke's film also enjoyed the biggest opening ever for a female director, blowing away the previous standard of $41.1 million set by Mimi Leder's "Deep Impact" in 1998.
Drawing from its huge fan base of teenage girls, who fell for Stephenie Meyer's novel of forbidden love between brooding vampire Edward Cullen and bookish high schooler Bella Swan, "Twilight" made a whopping $20,636 per theater, according to Sunday morning estimates.
And the fangirls will get another taste soon enough: Summit Entertainment, which released "Twilight," announced during the weekend that it's going ahead with production of "New Moon," based on the second book in Meyer's internationally best-selling series. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart will return as its star-crossed lovers, but whether Hardwicke will be at the helm again is still being determined.
The laid-back Hardwicke, who went bodyboarding at sunset Saturday to take her mind off this high-pressure weekend, said Sunday morning that she was heading to a meeting later in the day to discuss her possible involvement in "New Moon."
"I want to be sure that it's going to be done right. I don't want to rush into it," she said. "It's not like 'Friday the 13th' or 'Halloween,' you can't just do it super fast and knock another one out. I want to understand their plans and all that."
Hardwicke, whose previous films include "Thirteen" and "Lords of Dogtown," also said she was thrilled about the prospect that the success of "Twilight" will inspire other women and young girls to pursue a career in filmmaking.
"I hope not just women but all minorities get enthused and encouraged by it. I look at the (Directors Guild of America) calendar, at the pictures of everyone that had different movies each month, and it's usually 22-29 different directors, and almost every month there's one female and maybe one minority," she said. "We've been having a lot of events, talking to a lot of fans, and so many kids of course are madly in love with Robert but tons of kids of every kind (and) girls are coming up to me and saying 'I want to direct now, I'm writing a screenplay now, you're my inspiration.' I think it's great that people are getting excited."
The big opening for "Twilight" also helps put Summit Entertainment on the map, said Richie Say, the company's president of domestic distribution. Summit has only been around since April 2007 and "Twilight," its sixth release, cost just $37 million to make.
"It certainly says what we've been saying all along, that we can do more with less," he said. When Warner Bros. pushed "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" from this weekend to a July 2009 debut, and Summit jumped to move "Twilight" from Dec. 12 into that spot on the schedule, "that decision was made in a day. I don't know that the major studios have that ability."
The tremendous take for "Twilight" far exceeded expectations, which had been set around $50 million.
"Teen girls rule the earth," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers. "If you look back at the 'Hannah Montana' movie, how well that did, and now this movie, the teen girl audience will never be ignored again or underestimated. It was always teen boys who were the coveted ones, but someone finally caught on to the idea that girls love movies, too, and if you create something that they're into, that they're passionate about, they will come out in big numbers and drive the box office."
The other major debut of the weekend, Walt Disney's 3-D animated "Bolt," made $27 million to take third place. Featuring the voices of John Travolta and Miley Cyrus, "Bolt" follows the cross-country journey of a dog who plays a superhero on television, but sadly realizes he has no magical powers once he gets separated from his "person."
Chuck Viane, Disney's head of distribution, said "Twilight" took a bite out of everyone's box office this weekend. If the vampire saga hadn't been around, Viane said, Disney would have expected an opening of at least $30 million.
"Obviously we believe in the Thanksgiving holiday in a big, big way," he said. "We've always viewed this as one of those 10-day marathons between opening day and the end of the Thanksgiving weekend."
Last weekend's No. 1 movie, "Quantum of Solace," came in second with $27.4 million. The latest James Bond extravaganza has now grossed $109.5 million, and it crossed the $100 million mark faster than any other film in the franchise, said Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony. It's also made $309 million internationally.
"We're in great shape. We're way ahead of where we were with 'Casino Royale,'" said Bruer, referring to the last Bond picture, which also starred Daniel Craig as a more visceral incarnation of 007.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.

"We'll get them to bed and one will show up about a half hour later. But the proud papa, who leads one of the world's most famous families with partner Angelina Jolie, wants to keep adding to his brood.

Calling his family "the thing I'm most proud of," he gushed about their latest additions, twins Vivienne Marcheline and Knox Leon.
"They're lovely," he said of the four-month-old babies. "It's very strange though, he kind of looks like me and she kind of looks like Angie."
And despite their difficulties, according to Brad, having children has given him a parental super-power.
"I'm impervious to poo, snot, urine [and] vomit," he said. "In the beginning, it was 'Oh God, oh, how do they vomit that much,' now it's just, 'Honey, come here, see that, you need to chew your food.'"

Crisis? What crisis? Dubai hotel to throw 20 mln dlr party
Dubai is throwing a multi-million-dollar extravaganza on Thursday to launch a luxury hotel on an artificial palm-shaped island, despite the bite from the global financial crisis.
More than 2,000 world celebrities are due to attend the event which has been dubbed by the local press as "the party of the decade."
Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey, actors Robert De Niro and Denzel Washington, and former basketball great Michael Jordan are expected to walk the red carpet at the 1.5-billion-dollar "Atlantis, The Palm" hotel.
The evening will peak with a fireworks display that will be "seven times larger than this year's Olympic Games opening ceremony" in Beijing and will be "visible from space", according to the event organisers.
The event will cost a hefty 20 million dollars, said Sol Kerzner, the South African billionnaire, hotel and gambling tycoon, who is organising the bash.
"We built something that's quite extraordinary. We've got to tell the world about it," Kerzner told AFP about the lavish hotel which was built through a joint venture with giant local developer Nakheel.
Nakheel, which is controlled by the Dubai government, has built some of the most iconic projects that have put the Gulf emirate on the world map, including a cluster of islands making the shape of the world.
Located at the trunk-top of the Palm Jumeirah, one of three palm-shaped islands, Atlantis occupies the entire central part of a huge breakwater.
The 1,539-room hotel is made up of two pale rose towers, which are linked by a bridge which houses a 35,000-dollar-a-night suite.
Management says there is a waiting list of guests for the suite.
The Dubai hotel is inspired by the original Atlantis that Kerzner built in the Bahamas but is not an average 5-star hotel.
It boasts the largest waterpark in the Middle East and a gigantic aquarium in which 65,000 fish, along with an enormous whale shark, swim in 11 million litres of water.
The project was conceived at a time before the global economic crisis began biting the Gulf emirate.
But Kerzner says he is optimistic about the future, adding that he designed the hotel "for the medium to longer term."
The hotel opened unofficially on September 24 and has had an occupancy rate of 80 percent, Kerzner said. "We don't know how long it's going to take for the economy around the world to take off again," he added.
The financial meltdown has affected Dubai and other Gulf emirates.
The local stock market has crashed, losing two thirds of its value since the beginning of the year, and Dubai's real estate sector, a major driving force of domestic economy, has begun to stutter.
Even Nakheel, Kerzner's partner in the Atlantis, announced on Monday that it would scale down its activities.
The bulk of Dubai's tourists come from European countries, mainly Britain, which also have been hard hit by the crisis, and this could have a direct impact on Atlantis.
Kerzner, 73, acquired his fame and fortune in the 1970s and 1980s by building hotels and casinos in South Africa, including the prestigious resort Sun City.
He appears to share with Dubai the same taste for challenges and larger-than-life projects, which might explain the partnership between this Jewish businessman and the Arab sheikhs who rule this Gulf emirate.
His Kerzner International also has not escaped unscathed from the global financial crisis.
The company recently laid off 800 of its employees at Paradise Island Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas because of a sharp drop in the number of American visitors.

The former Spice Girl will play leading lady Peep Diva in the classy 'Peepshow' strip show next year.
Mel - who is married to film producer Stephen Belafonte - told People magazine: 'This part is great for me. As a Spice Girl I would bring guys on the stage and whip them, so I think I've always been slightly naughty.'
A source said: 'Mel can't wait. She won't go topless, but she will be showing a considerable amount of flesh in a range of sexy stage outfits. I'm sure Mel's husband is hoping she will bring some of them home.'
'Peepshow' is set to open at Las Vegas' Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in April 2009.
The production will feature Mel's character leading another dancer, Bo Peep - played by US TV star Kelly Monaco - from a timid girl to a confident, sensual woman.
Mel, 33, added: 'This is an original show. The Peep Diva is a diva, but it's all about empowering Kelly's part.'
Both Mel and Kelly have previously appeared on 'Dancing with the Stars'.
The show's creator, choreographer Jerry Mitchell, said: 'We have gathered 20 of the sexiest dancers from film, video, and Broadway to bring a truly American form of entertainment back to the strip.
'The art of the tease, mixed with humour, razzle-dazzle, and today's sexy music, with 'Peepshow' these stunning dancers will use their bodies to tell a story.'

127 Filipinos being held by pirates off Somalia
A total of 127 Filipino seamen are being held hostage aboard seven vessels hijacked by pirates off the Somalia coast this year, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday.
The figure includes 19 Filipinos who were among the 25-member crew of the Saudi super-tanker Sirius Star seized by pirates Saturday, department officials said.
Crescente Relacion, the department's executive director for migrant workers, said there was very little the government could do to solve the problem.
She said the government had looked at banning Filipino seamen from working in dangerous waters near Somalia but this was difficult to enforce as the agencies chartering the ships still found this "the most convenient and less expensive route."
"It is hard to monitor them. The seamen only list their point of embarkation," she said.
"The charterer is the one who determines where to send them," Relacion added.
Since the start of the year there have been 17 vessels with 201 Filipino seamen seized by pirates off Somalia but 10 of the vessels and 74 Filipinos have been released, said Relacion.
"The agencies that hired the Filipino seamen negotiate directly with the pirates," said Relacion, adding that the government was not privy to the talks and did not know if any ransom was paid.
Relacion said about a third or 350,000 of the world's merchant seamen come from the Philippines.
The International Maritime Bureau, an international watchdog, said Wednesday that piracy in Somalia was "out of control" and called on the United Nations to step in after the hijacking of the Saudi supertanker.

China's Hu to boost ties in Cuba visit
China's President Hu Jintao traveled to Cuba to boost ties with the government of President Raul Castro, as the slowly-opening communist island also reaches out to Russia.
Hu's two-day visit to Havana follows a G20 summit in Washington and a 24-hour stopover in Costa Rica, where he launched free trade talks and a string of cooperation deals.
Hu's Latin America tour, which also includes an Asia-Pacific summit in Peru, comes as China expands its diplomacy and investment on the whole continent, eyeing natural resources and developing markets for manufactured goods and even weapons.
Chinese exports to Latin America grew 52 percent in the first nine months of 2008 to 111.5 billion dollars, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.
China was Cuba's second business partner, after Venezuela, in 2007 with 2.7 billion dollars of combined trade, and one of its main creditors.
The two communist countries have increased ties since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.
"This visit is an expression of the excellent existing links between both parties and governments," said a statement published in Cuba's official government paper Granma on Monday.
Hu's visit comes less than two weeks before the arrival of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, in another Russian bid to fortify relations with outspoken US adversaries in Latin America on the back of a trip to Venezuela.
China offered support to former Cuban leader Fidel Castro when Cuba fell into dire economic straits after the former Soviet Union collapsed, forging a divide Russia has recently sought to reduce.
Hu first visited Cuba in 2004 -- again shortly after a US election -- to oversee the signing of 16 cooperation agreements, which he was expected to build on this time.
Current deals include Chinese oil prospecting and extraction in Cuba -- onshore and offshore -- and the development of Cuban eye hospitals in China.
Since Raul Castro officially assumed power in February, taking over from his ailing brother Fidel, analysts suggest he is moving toward China's market economy model, although authorities still underline support for Cuba's state controlled economy.
Raul Castro recently sought foreign investment for the prospection and exploitation of gold, silver, zinc and copper deposits.
China already invests in nickel, Cuba'a main export, and hydrocarbons on the island, which produces the equivalent of 80,000 barrels of oil and gas per day.
Granma on Monday lauded the Chinese model but underlined "an unequal distribution of wealth in the country, marked difference between city and countryside and the erosion of the environment."
Fidel Castro, who still influences the island's politics from his sickbed, ruled out a transition to capitalism in an article published Saturday, and on Monday criticized leaders at a recent G20 summit for accepting US "demands".
It was unclear whether Hu would meet with Fidel, who has met with several foreign leaders in recent months including Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Fight over Philippines paradise isle turns ugly
Boracay, with its crystal clear water, white powder sand and constant sunshine, presents itself as a slice of paradise but scratch the surface and the island is seething with unrest.The bone-shaped, 1,000-hectare (2,470-acre) island in the central Philippines has been transformed in 40 years from a sleepy limestone outcrop without electricity into one of the country's priciest chunks of real estate.
A fifth of the country's tourist traffic, mostly big-spending Americans and Europeans, winter along its 4.5-kilometre (2.8-mile) stretch of pristine beachfront that is drenched in year-round tropical sunshine.
Kite-boarders, sailboats, banana boats, swimmers and scuba-diving parties jostle for space along the clear, turquoise-tinged waters that are a few yards (metres) from hotels, tattoo parlours, bistros and other tourist havens.
But the scramble to secure ownership of some of the most valuable real estate in the country has led to violence including tear gas, fires and allegations of kidnapping, as well as prolonged court action.
Recently a 1.5-hectare (3.6-acre) warren of tourist shops, restaurants and inns was burnt to the ground ending one family's long, legal fight to keep the property they had spent years developing.
The Supreme Court has since awarded the property to a major developer.
Police reported finding "molotov cocktails and an unknown flammable substance" among the ruins -- and despite rumours, no one seriously believes the owners would burn down their own possessions.
Nearby, Australian hotelier Gregory Hutchinson is still barricaded in the top floor of the 6,000-square-metre (1.5-acre) Sand Castles resort after his landlord canceled his lease and seized the ground floor with the help of armed private security.
The glass facade was shattered in the takeover skirmish. No one was hurt but the hotel guests fled, leaving fibreglass kayaks scattered in the yard.
"If these things (property disputes) continue no one in his right mind would want to come and visit this place," Superintendent Arnold Ardiente, police chief of this tourist island told AFP as his men brought food and toiletries upstairs to Hutchinson and his family.
"It's not good for the island," Steve Murray, a burly Australian shopkeeper who doubles as his country's consular warden for the area, said of the property disputes.
He has seen a few during his eight years here, but "many of them are kept quiet" so as not to upset the tourists.
Ardiente said: "There have been several incidents involving land disputes that turned violent. People would shoot at each other and people would die, but all these cases are now in the courts."
The local resort owners' association, called Boracay Foundation, is steering clear of the controversies and refusing to comment.
Still, with the peak tourist season just a month away, the locals are up in arms over a 2006 government edict that declared 40 percent of the island a forest reserve.
The Supreme Court recently upheld President Gloria Arroyo on the issue, throwing out private claimants' bid to secure legal titles to land on which hundreds of millions of dollars have been sunk into tourist-related building improvements.
Only 10 percent of the area has land titles, with the rest of the resort owners and residents essentially leasing space by paying real estate taxes.
"While it's not really a major irritant because people have a way of settling these, it has remained an irritant because of the untitled nature of properties here on the island," said Florencio Miraflores, the congressman for the district.
Miraflores, who also owns land here, is pushing a bill that would allow families who have been in Boracay for 30 years to apply for legal titles to their plots.
With Philippine tourist arrivals projected to break through the four million-mark this year despite a global economic slowdown, three top hotel chains are expected to open within a year.
Filipino-American hotelier Ariel Abriam, who is buying up rights to beach-side property here, accepts that, like in Cancun or Waikiki, Boracay businesses would undergo consolidation with only the big players left standing as the tourist destination matures.
"All these little shops on the beachfront are going to disappear. It's just a matter of time," said the ex-US navyman, who spent his pension to build the 30-room Boracay Beach Club hotel that is favoured by Filipino movie stars and retired US servicemen.

Mickey Mouse

That day, November 18, 1928, is widely considered the iconic mouse's official birthday. But months before, Walt Disney had dreamt up the cartoon character and featured it in the short animated film "Plane Crazy."
"'Steamboat Willie' is the most famous of the early Mickey Mouse films because it has a soundtrack," Eric Smoodin, a professor of film studies at the University of California, Davis, told AFP.
"Mickey Mouse, within a year or two after Steamboat Willie, becomes the biggest star in the world," Smoodin said.
"So even though it's not the first Mickey Mouse film, it really was the beginning of his great celebrity," he added, speculating that in the 1930s, only Charlie Chaplin came close to Mickey Mouse in terms of global super-stardom.
Mickey Mouse was created almost by accident: Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was Walt Disney's first cartoon character, but when Disney lost the rights to Oswald in 1927, he returned to the drawing board.
He came up with "Mortimer the Mouse." Popular legend has it that his wife preferred the name Mickey, and Walt Disney deferred to her choice.
"Steamboat Willie" has a flimsy, politically incorrect storyline and features little, if any, comprehensible dialogue.
But the cartoon marked an animation landmark with its synchronized sound track where Mickey whistles and blows raspberries at the irascible ship's captain, a large tobacco-chewing cat called Captain Pete.
In roughly seven minutes, Captain Pete kicks Mickey Mouse out of the steering room of a riverboat. The hero then hoists Minnie Mouse on board using a crane that grabs her by the knickers, swings a cat by the tail, strangles a goose and plays keyboard on some suckling piglets as the American folk song "Turkey in the Straw" plays from a goat's innards.
"Mickey Mouse was both a great star of Hollywood and the world and a symbol of Disney's technological innovation," said Smoodin.
Walt Disney recorded the "Steamboat Willie" soundtrack with "the bootleg Powers Cinephone process ... using a 15-piece band and his own squeaks for Mickey," according to the Disney website.
"It was an early sound film when there weren't that many sound films being made. Disney committed to making only sound films after that," explained Smoodin.
The Disney studios pioneered the use of color-film cinematography and 3-D films in the 1930s. Disney also made innovative use of stereo sound technology in "Fantasia," a movie starring Mickey Mouse and first released in 1946.
Just over a year after his debut in "Steamboat Willie," on January 13, 1930, Mickey Mouse got his own comic strip, drawn by artist Ub Iwerks.
He made it into the Sunday comics on January 10, 1932, the same year that Walt Disney won a special Academy Award for creating the friendly rodent.
Mickey Mouse has gone on to star in over 120 different cartoons and got his own television show, "The Mickey Mouse Club," in the 1950s. The show's theme song engraved in the minds of a generation of Americans how to spell M-I-C, K-E-Y, M-O-U-S-E.
These days, children watch Mickey on the mouse's eponymous Clubhouse, which airs on Playhouse Disney.
His trademark morphology -- the ears above all -- appears on merchandise items ranging from T-shirts to cuddly toys, most often sporting his white gloves, red shorts and yellow shoes. Mickey has also been featured in museum exhibits from New York to Helsinki and Tokyo.

My Happy Ending..
So much for my happy ending! Lol. I actually got the title of this post (obviously) From Avril Lavigne's song. I have always been wondering if I am allowed to have a happy ending. I always wondered how it would feel to be loved equally. It's just that I always give too much and receive too little.
Fine! Honestly I am totally going SUPER EMO because my boyfriend is mad at me. He's so freakin far that I just don't know what to do to reach out to him. To be near him. 
I am doing my best to keep the relationship going but then I just dont know if im doing the right thing or I'm exaggerating And this make me literally crazy! I can't take it easy or something.. I just don't know what to do And I am so brokenhearted right now I dont know what to say, to tell him or whatever.
We were texting last night and I have to tell him a lot of things at one go because international texting is soooooooooooooooo freakin expensive it's a buzzkill. But Still I am trying my very best to reach out just to be able to talk to him. To tell him what I really feel and tell him what I think about things. But Netherlands is just sooooooooooooooooooooo far from the Philippines that If I could sold everything that I have just to be with him I could have done it.
Maybe I pissed him off last night, no not maybe I really did piss him off. He was telling me that he's going to go partyin in Germany and because it was saturday night I know it's considerable. because he has been working really hard while I am working at home. I know he deserves it, because my motto goes "work hard, party harder". But.................................. OK that was freakin my fault! FINE! FINE! FINE! Siiiiiiiiiiiggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh.. I am always the imature one and the whatever one! It kills me not to be with him! Madagascar 2
This is one heck of a cool movie. My best friend and I watched this movie yesterday and I find it really cool. Both of us are really, really childish and we were like laughing the whole time! It is a bit sentimental and I'm glad that Alex is finally home with his mom and dad, the Alpha. It's so funny my stomach hurt after the movie! I love the part when Marti is with his herd. Chris Rock sound really, really hilarious!
Moto Moto sounds cool as well.. Except for the fact that he is so darn dumb that he cant even remember what he was saying.. LOL he just kept on repeating the lines "you are huge!"LOL Will.i.am has great voice.. haha

"Twilight" film franchise looks ahead
Ahead of next Friday's release of the eagerly anticipated vampire romance "Twilight," indie studio Summit Entertainment is moving potential future installments in the franchise into the development pipeline.
The company has acquired rights to the next three novels in Stephenie Meyer's blockbuster series, "New Moon," "Eclipse" and "Breaking Dawn."
It has hired "Twilight" scribe Melissa Rosenberg, a writer/producer on Showtime's "Dexter," to adapt the first two. "Breaking Dawn," has not attached a writer.
"Twilight," which revolves around the relationship between an average teenage girl, Bella, and a vampire, Edward, in a rainy Northwest town, has been generating huge buzz ahead of its November 21 bow.
In "New Moon," Edward leaves Bella, sending Bella into a depression and a friendship with another vampire. In the third book, "Eclipse," that relationship triangle evolves, while evil empires begin to pursue Bella. "Breaking Dawn" pushes the plot further with a marriage between Bella and Edward.

At long last I have seen this movie this afternoon! Well, my dad told me it's not as good as the old James Bond movie but I think that it's still quite good. It looked complicated though. And I am still super amazed that James Bond is that hard to kill and all that! I mean all he did in the movie was kill people and rescue them and there were like tons of action thingies, and stealing cars, and guns and stuffs like that! lol
I know I'm being silly but this is the fist time I've seen a James Bond movie since I'm not a big fan. And for a first timer I think that the movie was quite cool ^_^ And I love Olga Kurylenko! She is sooooooooooooo freakin beautiful, sexy and hot! And I am so having a hard time with her last name.. lol Though she's super dark than she was in Max Payne.. And I think that David Craig is like one of the sexiest man of his age! I mean look at him! And I just love his eyes! It's something to die for!lol I'm a sucker for blue eyed men (And yes my boyfriend have blue eyes :P).. haha

Boring days..
It's been so boring lately. I just don't know what to do. And I have a lot of free time in my hands since I am working at home. Yesterday Thank God my best friend and one of my close friends Joey was with me or else I'll go crazy! So we watched Madagascar 2. And had laughed real hard.

Amanda came awake to an awful throbbing in her head. She felt terrible.
What had hap....
She tensed as she remembered the unseen man.
His words.
Terrified, she pushed herself up, and quickly learned she was on a cold concrete floor, in a very small, dust covered room...
And handcuffed to an unknown blond man.
A scream wedged itself in her throat, but she held it back.

Tabitha was always trying unorthodox ways to set her up with guys. Although, to be fair to her sister, Tabitha didn’t usually knock the guy unconscious before she forced them together.
Still, with Tabitha there was always a first time for just about anything. And extreme blind-dating was very vintage T.
Forcing herself to remain calm until she had more information, Amanda took in her surroundings. The two of them were in a small room with no windows and one rusty, iron door. A door she couldn’t reach without dragging her "friend" across the floor.
There was no furniture or anything else. The only light came from a small bulb in the center of the ceiling.
Okay, so she wasn’t in immediate danger.
Still far from comforted, she looked at the body beside her. He lay with his back to her, and he was either dead or unconscious.
Preferring the latter, she inched toward him. He appeared rather tall, and he was positioned as if he had been dumped roughly onto the floor.
Her legs shaking, Amanda rose slowly to her knees and moved over him to keep his arm from being twisted anymore.
He didn’t move.
She trailed her gaze over his body. A long black leather coat, black jeans and a black crew-neck shirt combined to give him an extremely dangerous appearance even while lying on the floor. His feet were covered by a pair of black biker boots with strange silver inlays in the heels.
His wavy blond hair fell over his face and met the collar of his coat, obscuring his features from her view.
"Excuse me?" she whispered, reaching out to touch his arm. "Are you alive?"
As soon as her hand touched the hard, lean muscle of his biceps, her breath faltered. His prone body was like coiled steel. There wasn’t a bit of a fleshy feel to him. He was all lithe, strong power.

Before she could stop herself, Amanda ran her hand down his arm. The feel of it!
She let out a slow, appreciative breath.
"Guy? Mister?" she tried again, shaking his hard, muscular shoulder. "Mr. Goth man, would you please wake up so I can leave? He didn’t budge.

Biting her lip, Amanda rolled him onto his back. His hair fell away from his face at the same moment his collar did.
Her breath caught in her throat. Okay, now she was majorly impressed.
He was gorgeous. His jaw was strong and defined, his cheekbones high. His face was aristocratically boned, and he had just the tiniest hint of a cleft in his chin.
Oh baby, this man possessed that rare masculine beauty that only a few, very lucky women ever saw in the flesh.
Better still, he had the best looking lips she’d ever seen. Full and expressive, that mouth that had been made for long, hot kisses.
In fact, the only flaw on his face was a hairline scar that ran across the lower edge of his jaw, from his ear to his chin.

Relieved he was alive, she tried to shake him again. "Hey, yummy leather guy? Can you hear me?"
He moaned low in his throat, then slowly blinked his eyes open. Amanda started at the sight of those eyes. They were so dark, they appeared black, and when they focused on her, they dilated menacingly.
With a curse, he grabbed her by the shoulders.
Before she could move, he rolled over with her, pinning her against the floor beneath his body as he held her wrists above her head.
Those dark, captivating eyes searched hers suspiciously.
Amanda couldn’t breathe. Every inch of him was pressed intimately against her and she became instantly aware of the fact that his arms weren’t the only part of his body that was rock hard and solid. The man was a wall of sleek, strong muscle.
His hips rested dead center between her legs while his hard, taut stomach leaned against her in a way that brought a flush to her cheeks. Made her feel hot and tingly. Breathless.

"You are not Tabitha Devereaux." He whispered the words so softly that even with his mouth brushing her ear she had to strain to hear him.
She swallowed. "You know T—"

His gaze focused hungrily on her lips and she saw the raw longing in the depths of those midnight eyes. His jaw flexed rigidly as if he were fighting himself.
His masculine power and overt sexuality overwhelmed her.
As she lay there beneath him, she realized just how vulnerable she was to him. Or better yet, just how much she truly wanted a taste of those well-shaped lips.
That thought both scared and excited her.
He blinked and a veil came over his face, disguising his mood from her. He released her.
As he moved away, she saw the blood on her pink sweater. "Oh, my God!" she gasped. "You’re bleeding?"
He took a deep breath as he sat next to her. "The wound will heal."
Amanda couldn’t believe his nonchalant tone. Judging from the amount of blood on her clothes, she would say he was seriously injured and yet he showed no other signs of it. "Where are you hurt?"
He didn’t answer. Instead, he ran his left hand through his tawny hair. He paused to glare at the large silver handcuff on his right wrist, then he started pulling angrily at it.
By the deadly, cold light in his eyes, she could tell the handcuffs bothered him even more than they did her.
Now that he was awake and not on top of her, Amanda was struck by the dark, moodiness of his features. There was something very romantic and compelling about his face.
Something heroic.
All too easily, she could see him dressed like a Regency rake or medieval knight. His classical features held an indefinable quality that seemed oddly out of place in this modern world.
"Well, well," a disembodied voice said. "The Dark-Hunter is awake."
Amanda recognized the evil voice as the one belonging to whomever had clobbered her at Tabitha’s house.
"Desi, babe," the man beside her said in a chiding tone as he looked about the brown walls. "Still playing your little games, I see. Now why don’t you be a good Daimon and show yourself to me?"
"All in good time, Dark-Hunter, all in good time. You see, I am not like the others who run and cower from the big, bad wolf. I am the big, bad woodsman who executes that wolf."
The disembodied voice gave a dramatic pause. "You and Tabitha Devereaux have been merciless in your pursuit of my brethren and the time has come for you to know fear. By the time I finish with the two of you, you will be begging me to let you die."
The Dark-Hunter lowered his head and laughed. "Desi-dearest, I have never begged a day in my life, and the sun will surely splinter before I ever plead for anything from the likes of you."
"Hubris," Desi said. "I so love punishing that crime."
The Dark-Hunter pushed himself to his feet, and it was then Amanda saw the wound in his side. His shirt was slightly torn and blood stained the floor where he had been sitting.
But he didn’t seem to notice the injury.
"Tell me, do you like your handcuffs?" Desi asked. "Those shackles are from the forge of Hephaestus. Only a god or a key fashioned by Hephaestus can open them. And since the gods have abandoned you..."
The Dark-Hunter glanced around the room. The fierce look on his face would have scared the devil himself. "I am so going to enjoy killing you."
Desiderius laughed. "I doubt you’ll get the chance once your little friend learns what you are."
The Dark-Hunter cast a look at her that told her to keep her identity quiet. Not that he needed to. The last thing she would ever do is betray her sister.
"Is that why you chained us together?" the Dark-Hunter asked. "You wanted to watch us fight?"
"Oh, no." Desiderius said. "Not my plan at all. If you kill each other, that would be fine by me, but what I intend to do is release you come the dawn. You see, the Dark-Hunter is about to become the hunted and I am going to thoroughly enjoy tracking you down and making you suffer. There is no place you can hide that I won’t find you."
The Dark-Hunter smirked. "You think you’re capable of hunting me?"
"Oh, yes. Yes, I do. You see, I know your weakness even better than you do."
"I have no weakness."
Desiderius laughed. "Spoken like a true Dark-Hunter. But all of us have an Achilles heel, especially those who serve Artemis. You are no exception."
Amanda swore she could almost hear Desiderius lick his lips in satisfaction. "Your greatest weakness is your nobility. Tabitha hates you, yet you won’t kill her to be safe. While she tries to kill you, you’ll guard her from me with your life." Desiderius laughed evilly. "You just can’t resist a human in peril, can you?"
"Desi, Desi, Desi," the Dark-Hunter tsked. "What am I going to do with you?"
"Don’t you dare take that flippant tone with me."
"Why ever not?"
"Because I am not some scared little Daimon to run cringing from you. I am your worst nightmare."
The Dark-Hunter scoffed. "Must you resort to cliches? C’mon Desidisastrous, couldn’t you think of anything more original than that B-movie dialogue staple?"
A furious snarl echoed in the room. "Stop mocking my name."
"Sorry, you’re right. The least I could do is show you respect before I expire you."
"Oh, you won’t expire me, Dark-Hunter. You are the one who will die this time. Have you given thought to how much she’s going to slow you down? Not to mention the existence of her little friends. They will take you down like a pack of wild dogs. And if I were you, I’d pray for that. You have never known the suffering I will inflict upon you when next we meet."
His lips in a tight, firm line, the Dark-Hunter smiled at Desiderius’s threats. "You seriously overestimate your abilities."
"We shall see."
Amanda heard a mic click off.
The Dark-Hunter jerked again at the cuffs. "I am so going to kill that horror movie reject."
"Hey, hey, hey!" she said as he flapped her arm around while trying to free himself. "That arm is attached."
He paused and looked down at her. His gaze softened. "Twins. It never occurred to him. Have you any idea where your sister is?"
"I don’t even know where I am or what time it is. For that matter, I don’t know what’s going on here. Who are you and who is that guy?" Then, she lowered her voice and added, "Can he hear us?"
Kyrian shook his head. "No, the mic channel is closed. For the moment, he’s off plotting his Igor-esk revenge. I don’t know about you, but I have this image of him rubbing his hands together and laughing like Dexter from Dexter’s Laboratory."
Kyrian took a minute to study her. She didn’t appear hysterical... yet, and he wanted to keep it that way. Telling her Desiderius was a soul-sucking demon who was after her sister didn’t seem like the best way to accomplish that.
Of course, given her sister’s penchant for vampire hunting, it shouldn’t really come as a surprise to her either.
Closing his eyes, he reached into her mind with his and found confirmation of his suspicions. There was a healthy dose of fear in her.
Unlike her sister Tabitha, she wasn’t one to jump to conclusions, but she was curious and angry over their situation. It was possible he could tell her everything without freaking her out, but the Dark-Hunter in him operated on a need-to-know basis.
Right now all she needed to know was the bare minimum. With any luck he would be able to separate them without having to reveal anything more about himself to her.
"I am called Hunter," he said solemnly. "And that guy is a man out to harm your sister."
"Thanks, but that much I already got." Amanda frowned. She should be frightened by all this, but she wasn’t. Her anger over it was too great. Leave it to her to get mixed-up in her sister’s crazy life.
In fact, she was glad they had captured her by mistake, since Tabitha would no doubt pull some kamikaze stunt and get herself killed.
She looked up at the Dark-Hunter and her frown deepened. How did he know all that about Tabitha? For that matter, how had he been able to tell them apart when even their own mother had trouble at times? "Are you one of my sister’s friends?"
He looked at her blankly, before pulling her to her feet. "No," he said as he patted his chest, hips, rear and legs.
Amanda tried not to notice just how incredibly toned that body was as her hand was dragged in the wake of his. And when her hand brushed his hard, inner thigh, she thought she would moan.
He was built for sex and for speed. Too bad he wasn’t her type. In fact, he was the total antithesis to everything she found desirable in a man.
Wasn’t he?
He cursed. "Of course, he has my phone," he muttered, before leading her to the door.
After trying the knob, he studied the hinges.
When he unbuckled his left boot and toed it off, Amanda arched a brow. "What are you doing? Going for a swim?"
He gave her a cocky smirk before leaning down to pick the boot up off the floor. "Trying to get us out of here. You?"
"I’m trying not to get irritated at you."
Amusement flashed in his eyes, then he returned his attention to the door.
Amanda watched as he pressed one of the silver inlays and a vicious five inch blade shot out of the toe. He was such Tabitha’s type. She wondered if he had throwing stars inside his pockets too.
"Oooo," she commented drily. "Very scary."
He gave her an unamused look at her sarcasm. "Baby, you ain’t seen scary yet."
Amanda smirked at his Ford Farlaine, tough guy demeanor and gave a very unfeminine snort.
He ignored her. Using the jagged blade, he tried to pry loose the rusted hinges.
"You’re going to break that blade if you’re not careful," she warned him.
He gave her an arched look. "Nothing on this earth could break this blade." He ground his teeth while hammering the boot with his fist. "Much like nothing on this earth appears able to move this hinge." He tried for several more minutes.
"Damn," he snarled when the hinge refused to budge. He retracted the blade, then bent over to put the boot back on. The back of his coat parted with his movements, gifting her with a nice view of him.
Oh yeah, nice butt.
Amanda’s mouth went dry as he finally straightened to his full six feet five inch height.
Oh my, my, my.
Okay, she took it back, he did have one feature she found irresistible. His height. She’d always been a sucker for any man taller than her. And with this guy, she could easily wear three inch heels and not offend his male ego.
He towered over her.
And she liked it.
"How do you know my sister?" she asked, trying to keep her thoughts focused on the matter at hand and not on the matter of how much she wanted to taste those lips of his.
"I know her because she keeps getting in my way." He snatched at the cuffs again. "What is it with you humans that you feel this incessant need to delve into things you should leave alone."
"I don’t delve into..." her voice trailed off as his words penetrated. "You humans? Why would you say that?"
He didn’t answer.
"Look," she said, holding up her arm to show the handcuff. "I’m stuck with you right now, and I want an answer."
"No, you don’t."
That did it. She hated Alpha men in the worst sort of way. Those domineering, I’m-the-man-baby-let-me-drive types nauseated her.
"All right, macho babe boy," she said irritably. "I’m not some little ditz who is going to bat her eyelashes at the buff stud in black leather. Don’t try your he-man tactics with me. I’ll have you know, in my office I’m known as the ball-breaker."
Kyrian frowned at her. "Macho babe boy?" he repeated in disbelief.
There had never been a time in his extremely long life that anyone had the mettle stand up to him. As a mortal, he had made entire Roman armies flee in stark terror of his approach. Few men had ever dared meet him eye to eye.
As a Dark-Hunter, he made legions of Daimons and Apollites quake in his presence. His name was whispered in awe and with reverence, and this woman had called him....
"Buff stud in black leather," he repeated out loud. "I don’t think I’ve ever been more insulted."
"Then you must have been an only child."
He laughed at that. In truth, he’d once had three younger sisters, but none of them had ever dared insult him.
He swept a look over her. She wasn’t classically beautiful, but there was an exotic quality to her almond-shaped eyes that lent her a fey charm.
Her long, mahogany hair was loose, spilling about her slender shoulders. But it was her blue eyes that were captivating. Warm and intelligent, they were narrowed on him now with malice.
A faint blush stained her cheeks, making her eyes a full shade darker. In spite of the danger they were in, he wondered what she would look like after a full night of raw, exhausting sex. He could just see her eyes dark with passion, her hair mussed, her cheeks red from his whiskers, and her lips moist and swollen from his kisses.
The thought made his entire body burn.
Until Kyrian felt the familiar prickling on the back of his neck. "It will be dawn soon."
"How do you know?"
"I just do," he pulled her to the left, then began examining the rust-covered walls for an escape. "Once we’re released, we’ll have to find a way to break out of these cuffs."
"Nice of you to state the obvious." Amanda glanced down his body and saw the jagged wound through the torn material. "You really need to tend that."
"God forbid I should bleed to death, eh?" he asked sardonically. "Then, you’d have to cart around my rotting corpse."
She wrinkled her nose in distaste. "Could you be any more morbid? Jeez. Who was your idol growing up? Boris Karloff."
"Hannibal, actually."
"You’re trying to scare me, aren’t you?" she asked, "Well, it won’t work. I grew up in a house with an angry poltergeist and two sisters who used to conjure demons just to fight them. Buster, I’ve seen it all, and your gallows humor isn’t working on me."
Before he realized what she was doing, she grabbed the bottom of his shirt and lifted it.
Amanda froze at the sight of his bare stomach. Lean, hard and flat, he had a rippling six-pack of abs that any gymnast would envy. But what made her gasp was the multitude of scars covering his flesh.
Worse, she saw the terrible gash in his side that ran along his lowest rib.
"Good Lord, what happened to you?"
He jerked his shirt down and took a step back. "If you mean the scars, it would take me years to account for all of them. If you mean the gash, it came from an thirteen-year-old Apollite I mistook for a child in need of help."
"You walked into a trap?"
He shrugged. "It’s not the first time."
Amanda swallowed as she swept her gaze over him. There was an aura of danger and death that surrounded him. He moved like a sleek, graceful predator, and those eyes...
They seemed to be able to take in more than just his basic surroundings. Those wicked, jet eyes held an ethereal glint to them that was indescribable.
Worst of all, they stole her breath every time he looked at her.
She’d never seen a blond man with eyes like that. Nor had she seen any man so incredibly handsome. His features were chiseled and perfect.
He oozed an almost unnatural masculine sexuality. She’d seen plenty of men who had tried their best to project what nature had dumped by the truckload onto this man.
"What is a Dark-Hunter?" she asked. "Is it like Buffy the Vampire Slayer?"
He laughed at that, "Yes, I’m a small, emaciated teenage girl who struts around fighting vampires in earrings they would rip out of my ears and shove up my—"
"I know you’re not a girl. But what is a Dark-Hunter?"
He sighed as he led her around the room, looking at the walls as if searching for a secret door. "In short, I execute the things that go bump in the night."
A chill went up her spine at his words, and yet she sensed there was something more than just his simple explanation. He appeared deadly, but not twisted, or even cruel. "Why do you want to kill Desiderius?"
He glanced at her before trying to open the steel door again. He wrenched the handle so forcefully, she was amazed he didn’t rip the doorknob off. "Because he not only kills humans, he steals their souls."
She tensed at his words. "Can he do that?"
"You said you’ve seen it all," he said in a mocking tone. "You tell me."
Amanda wanted to choke him. Never in her life had she met a more arrogant, or infuriating man.
"Why do I always get sucked into this supernatural mumbo-jumbo?" she muttered. "Is it too much to ask that I have one average day?"
"Life is seldom what we want it to be."
She frowned at his words, and at the odd note in his voice.
Kyrian tilted his head, and held his hand up to signal her for silence.
Out of nowhere, the doorknob clicked.
"Knock, knock," Desiderius said. "You have the day to hide. Come nightfall, we hunt."
"Yeah, yeah," Hunter said. "You and your little dog, too."
His blithe tone amazed her. The chilling words had absolutely no effect on him. "You’re not scared of his threats?"
He looked at her drily. "Chere, the day I fear something like him is the day I lie down at his feet and hand him the knife to cut my heart out. The only fear I have is getting you back to your sister and convincing High Queen Hard-Head to leave off this matter until I can locate Desiderius and send his soul into oblivion where it belongs."
In spite of herself and the danger they were in, Amanda laughed at his words. "High Queen Hard-Head? You know Tabitha well."
He disregarded her comment as he carefully shielded her with his body, then opened the door slowly. He paused to look around.
Outside the door was a narrow hallway with large, dust-covered windows that showed the dawning sun.
"Damn," Hunter snarled under his breath as he took a step back into the room.
"What?" she asked, her heart skipping a beat in terror. "Is someone out there?"
"No."
"Then, let’s go." She started out the door.
He didn’t budge.
Clenching his teeth, he looked down the hallway again and said something in a language she didn’t know.
"What’s the problem?" Amanda asked. "It’s dawn, and no one’s out there. Let’s leave."
He took a deep, aggravated breath. "The problem isn’t the people. The problem is the sun."
"And the problem with that is...?"
He hesitated for a few heartbeats, then opened his mouth and ran his tongue over his long, pointed canine teeth.

I just wish men these days are something like him.So Manly yet he never is ashamed to show how he really feels like. Grace is sweet too, but I just want Julian! ha ha ha. Men in story books are always almost perfect. Well he is perfect since he is the son of Aphrodite duh! Reading these books always makes me wonder if I can have my happy ending as well :(
